Can I create a single-cell table that moves with the text?
Insert single cell table in middle of text. I cannot do this in Word 2010 or 2013. I used to be able to do it in Word 2003. If you can please tell me hod to do this, you can ignore the material below about my attempts to do it, using instructions at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...005256739.aspx that apply to Word 2003.
A single cell table is useful on a form to allow a user to fill in a blank line. (The line is obtained by removing the top, left and right borders of the cell.) In word 2010/2013 when I try to insert a once cell table, word inserts a paragraph before the cell, and I cannot delete it. I try to format table properties (after adjusting the width to the amount I want), using Text Wrapping | Around, and then click on the Positioning icon. This gives an unclear menu. When I simply check the Move with text check-box, nothing happens. When I try to select "Inside" for both the vertical and horizontal position. The Move with text check box becomes unchecked. When I check it, the Horizontal position menu remains at "Inside", but the Vertical position changes to 0" and I still am stuck with a table that cannot be moved with the text. |

I do not see that behaviour in Word 2010. Of course, a document must always have at least one paragraph that follows the table and, if you change that table's alignment, the paragraph may appear on the page ahead of the table.

Paul -- thanks for your reply. I have attached a Word 2013 file showing my initial attempts to insert a single cell table between two elements of text that would move with the text the text. (I thought that this would be like "In line with text" text wrapping that is possible with pictures.) As you can see, it places a paragraph before the table, but not after it.
I did think of an answer to my problem that works as long as the total line length is less than one line. I simply have to put all the text in a one-row table. The places to be filled in by the user may be check-boxes (cells with four borders) or lines to be filled in by the user (cells with only the bottom border). The attached file has an example of this. While writing the paragraph above I realized that total length can be greater than one line; I just have to use a table with more than one row. However, putting all this text into table cells take care to make the final result look correct. Was it ever possible to have a table in Word that could be could have "wrapping", like a picture, to be "In line with text", or am I remembering this from Word Perfect many years ago? |

The behaviour your document demonstrates exists in Word 2003 & earlier also. The solution is quite simple, though.
Simply move the 'Two, three.' text that follows the first table to the paragraph containing the 'Testing one ' before the table. Then delete the empty paragraph following the table and move the table itself so that it is positioned between 'Testing one ' and 'Two, three'. For me, a position 4.65cm from the left page border and 0.1cm below the paragraph seems to work OK. If you need more flexible positioning (e.g. to allow for variable pre-table content on the same line), insert the table into a borderless textbox, then position that as required.

Thanks again for the suggestion. I will try the text box idea.
I guess that Microsoft does not have enough demand for the ability to format a table to have the "In line with text" wrapping style. Otherwise they would have included that simpler option in Word already. |

I haven't seen 2013 yet, but I find it remarkable that MS would remove the in-line with text setting, since it's the default in 2010, and, I thought, previous versions.

Word tables never had an 'inline with text' setting of that kind ...

Yes, I mis-wrote; "Text-wrapping None" is what I meant. If I understood the poster correctly, the use of the one-bordered table cell is the same as I frequently use for signature lines.
EDIT: On reflection, I did misread. What I use is, for example, a 2-column, single row table, e.g., Signature ________________. Sorry. Last edited by Ulodesk; 11-01-2013 at 07:07 AM. Reason: Mistaken |
