Default Include a table in landscape but keep footnote continuous

Hi guys

I am new to this forum as I was searching for some info about including tables in landscape rather than portrait and thought it would be good to get some advice. I have been struggling on this for two hours.

I am a final year phd student and need to submit in two weeks. So all documents are fine except for when I need to include a table. I have chapters 1,2 and 3 with no tables. All chapters start with footnotes as of 1.

I am now inserting a table in landscape in chapter 4. I did this through section breaks. But now, the footnotes after that are either starting as continuous from chapter 1 (so it gives me footnote 678, for e.g.) or if I right click footnote and note options, and click for start from 1 for new section, it starts at 1. What I am trying to do is to get it to continue from the footnote number in chapter 4 right before the table. Does that make sense? So it the footnote before the table is 67, I want the first footnote after the table to be 68.

Is there anyone out there who would be kind enough to help me out on this. I really need this. Everything else is fine - table of contents, biblio, table of cases. Just this one point.

Cheers

Prakash

I take it you're already re-starting footnote numbering for each Section, which is how you'd get 68 instead of 678. There are two possible approaches:
1. set the 'start at' number for the section following the table to 68; or
2. rotate the table instead of using Section breaks. In Word 2010 and later, provided you have the compatibility mode switched off, you can use: Insert>Text Box>Draw Text Box, insert the table into the text box, then rotate the text box.

Default Your ideas work but not what I am trying to do

Hi Paul

Thanks for the prompt response. Among the two solutions you provided, the second works in that I can include a table and then rotate it. But I already have a table completed. I want to incorporate that one. So not sure yet whether I can copy and paste or do another from scratch in the final document.

As far as your first solution is concerned, I can go to note options and start at a number but what it will do is put in continuous and add the number. So for example, in chapter 4, I want to start the footnotes from 1. That is fine- just head to note options and restart each section. Then when I include the table in landscape, while this is fine, the footnotes will pick up in continuous for the whole document - so all three chapters before.

So, if the footnote in continuous is 600 and I use note options and say start at 11 which is want because the previous footnote is 10, what the system will do is start it at 610. SO it will not add it to the number of the chapter I am working but all the footnotes.

Any idea what I can do from here. Someone out there must have been able to include a table/diagram in landscape and make sure the footnotes continue from that specific chapter's footnotes and not the whole PhD thesis footnotes.

But thanks for the response and your time. I have actually learnt a bit more about what you can do in word when you switch off compatibility mode.

I am hoping with your knowledge you might have an idea for how to sort out this diagram in landscape mode without any changes to footnotes. If not thanks anyways

Prakash

Simply create the textbox, cut your table from the body of the document, then paste it into the textbox.

I don't understand what you mean by this. If you tell Word to re-start footnote numbering for a Section and put in 11, where does 610 come from? Obviously, if you're trying to simulate the effect of having continuous numbering, then change the number of footnotes in the previous Section, you'll need to change the starting number for the next Section to reflect that.

Smile response

Hi Paul

Thanks again for the response. I have tried using the insert textbox and copy and paste - this does not look that great and it is taking a lot of time to format. I may just end up keeping all diagrams and tables portrait instead.

What I meant by the footnotes registering previous chapters was this. When I begin a new chapter, I am using section break and then for the new chapter's footnotes, I am starting all footnotes from one for this section. When it comes to including the table for chapter 4, I am using section break so that I can include the table and then turn that page to landscape. But when the writing continues on the next page, either it starts at 1 or it continues from the very beginning of the thesis. So it registers continuous as continuous from all previous chapters. Is this clearer?

I have no idea why it does this. I would have thought that when I include a section break to start chapter 4, then continuous would be still be continuous for chapter 4. So if the footnote before the table is 10 and I include the table, the footnote after the table should either be 1 or 11, right??? But it gives me continuous for the whole thesis - hence 638. Is this any clearer ???? If you do know anything, that would be great if you could help.

If not, I think I have three options.

a) Seek IT help from uni.
b) Include all tables as portrait which is ok but landscape would be better
c) Leave a blank page with the numbering continued for the thesis. When I print it, print the tables in landscape separate and then include them before binding. This will work if all else fails.

But I would still like to know how to sort this out properly. It is something that will stay on my mind for a long while now until I complete it.

Thanks for your help. If you do have any suggestions, that would be great.

Much appreciated

Prakash

Hi Prakash,

If rotating the textbox doesn't do what you need, see: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...html#post54386
Do note the restrictions on the kinds of table the macro can process. You will need to set row heights to 'exact' and unmerge any merged cells before running the macro, but the only thing you might need to do afterwards is to re-merge the cells you had to unmerge.

Default Will give it a go

Thanks Paul for your help again.

I will give this a go but I spent my entire day today, turning the tables to portrait. They look ok. Right now, I just have to finish this thesis.

If the tables and diagrams look ok as they are, then fine. I have only seven in all.
So all fine.

But I will come back to this once this is all done. I will head to uni's IT service and pay them a visit about this too. If I get any other info, I will let you know.

Cheers -

Prakash
