Lightbulb Creating table template on Microsoft Word (2003)

Hi all,

I am in serious need of help. My manager at work has asked me to create a table template on Word with the following features:

1. Easy to navigate from one cell to the other, i.e. tab across
2. It needs to be rock solid in the sense that users are able to type in cells, without the overall format of the table changing, spreading across the page or stretching downwards to a second page.

I have tried to create a table template with the above features using text boxes, however although you can set text boxes so that the size doesn't change, you cannot tab across from one to the other (you have to use your mouse).

Does anyone have any suggestions? My manager has put pressure on me to have this done by tomorrow. Any advice would be very welcome and much appreciated!

What you need to do is create a proper form.

Create the document however you are comfortable with, but leave the areas that are to be filled in by the user empty. (to keep it neat, I would suggest using tables - you can change the colour to white later, so that they can't be seen.)
Then go to:

View > Toolbars > Forms - click this to bring up the Forms toolbar

The first icon (ab|) is a text form field - use this to add fields wherever the user is to fill in information.
If you right-click on the field and look at the properties you can set some of the properties, including 'length' (play around with the settings to get it the right length.)

Once you have finished - select the table and change the line colour to white, then click on the little padlock on the Forms toolbar to protect the form - this means that users can now ONLY enter data into the fields, every other part of the document is locked.

If you now save this as a template and put a link where the end user can double click it, that should cover all that your boss is looking for!

If you need anymore help, then feel free to post.

Hi Bird Fat,

Thanks for your response. I do not have the 'view > toolbars > forms option on the version of Word that I am using (Microsoft Office 2003). Do you know how to bring up the Forms option with this version?

I hope you respond asap, as my boss is piling on the pressure for this template to be completed bu the end of today!

It IS there - as I aimed the instructions at that version!

If you open the View menu - click on the little double chevron icon at the bottom of the list to expand it - Toolbars is the 7th one down, directly below Task Pane.
