Cool How to Sort Table Cells from Left to Right

Hello,

I'm making a DVD list for the front desk of a hotel. I need to have the title of each movie along with a picture of the dvd's cover, in alphabetical order. We've got around 100 movies.

I'm using a table in Word to make a list of movies, with each movie name paired with a picture of the DVD cover. The title of the movie and the corresponding picture are each in a cell together. I've entered them in alphabetical order from left to right, continuing on row after row.

Now my question: when I add new movies to my list, or need to remove movies from my list, it creates a problem. I end up with an empty cell, or by adding an additional cell, it sticks out the side, out of line with the rest of the table.

Is there a way to move things around easily? Back in the day I used MySpace, and you could drag around your list of top friends easily. Is there a way to do this with my table? Or do you have any suggestions on how I could better handle this project?

Thanks!

The short answer is no. In any event, what it seems you're really intending is to sort by cell, regardless of column/row, from left to right, top to bottom. You can't do that.

What you could do is to configure the page layout for multiple columns, with only a single-column table. As you add/delete entries, you do so by adding/deleting rows. If you add/delete a row somewhere, Word will automatically adjust all the following cell positions. And, if need be, you can sort the table. A table under this scenario will necessarily be arranged vertically, then across, though you could change both the page orientation and the cell orientation to give the appearance of being arranged horizontally, then down.

Paul - can I ask a question. You write "though you could change both the page orientation and the cell orientation"

Do you mean change the page orientation to landscape and then turn the next direction? I am trying this but not getting satisfactory results.

Hi konopca,

Combined with a multiple-column page setup, yes. See attached.

Even this is probably not entirely satisfactory, as the rotated rows, when sorted, are the reverse of what you'd probably want (unless you're from the Middle East), as they're sorted from Right to Left, instead of left to Right.
