Default Desktop Ghosts - refresh desktop fixes but should not be needed

[Thread moved from Word forum to Windows forum by moderator]
A very strange situation.
Windows 10 MS Office 2019.

Step 1, open a new doc.
See pic 01

Change name.
See pic 02

Delete doc.
See pic 03

When deleted or moved, the ghosted “new doc.” (pic 01) remains and it won’t leave until another new dock is opened.

The same thing happens with new folders, excel etc.

I’ve refreshed W10 and reinstalled office with no change.

An update:
I have now discovered it happens with anything I place on the desktop; folder, picture, Office Doc, web shortcut, etc.

Whatever it is, if I place it on the desktop and change the name, it behaves like a copy of the original and layers that copy over the original. If I move it, even to another desktop spot, it leaves the original behind. That original now cannot be opened or deleted. However, it will just disappear, if I put another file of the same type on the desktop.

If I do all of this within a new folder on the desktop, there are no problems; except…if I rename that new folder on the desktop then it behaves the same way, as an overlay on the original.

Here, let me take it step by step in pictures:
01 create New Microsoft Word doc.
02 rename it to AndreTen
…see how it now overlays the original.
03 move renamed doc to the left
…now I have the original and the rename side by side
04 attempt to delete original produces the “can’t find”

Only when I create a new word doc does that original disappear.

As I said, this happens with almost anything I place on the desktop.

Funny thing is if I do the rename via Properties this does not happen. Only when I left click and rename.

Another update:
Refreshing the desktop; rigfht click, "Refresh" solves this issue but only temporarily.
When I place a new item on the desktop and rename it, I get the same thing again.

Not a difficult work around but having to do it with every new item is tiring.

Your profile shows Windows 8 but your initial post states Windows 10? Which is it? Maybe change your profile detail if it is W10?

If it is Windows 8 then it may be Windows 8 issue and not an Office issue. Windows 8 was a bad release and support ended way back in January 2016.

Also has it just started happening? If so then think back to when it started and what may have changed at that point that may be causing it.

Thank you for the nudge to change my profile, it's been a long time since I've been here.

My original post here is correct; W10 MSO 2019.

This is a new ASUS laptop as of March 15-22 and a new install of Ofice 2019.
As noted I reinstalled both, to no avail and also installed Office 2016.

No change.

This is really weird behaviour but the following qoute from your posts "Refreshing the desktop; rigfht click, "Refresh" solves this issue but only temporarily." suggests this is a Windows or a graphics driver thing. Nothing to do with Office. Because it only happens on the desktop that's a pointer to a bug in Windows I reckon.

Try updating all drivers as well as Windows.

I know this is a big suggestion but maybe consider upgrading to Windows 11?

As far as I am concerned, the idea that Windows 11 is an upgrade is still an open question.

I agree that it is a likely a Windows problem and am moving this to the Windows forum.

I posted here and on the 10 Forum (sub forum Office) about a problem I thought was Office related.

I had originally thought it was a Word and/or Office issue but as time went on, I realized it was more than that, as it involved other non-office items on my desktop.

Two nice folks on the 10 Forum, started chipping away and we now think we have found the problem, or at least stopped from recurring.

So thanks for looking and responding
