Message to purchase Windows 7 unnecessarily
I received the following message:
"This computer is not running genuine Windows. To use Windows without interruption this computer needs to run genuine windows. With Genuine Windows you have access to all windows updates. It asks me to purchase a Genuine Windows 7. The computer in question is an HP purchased 4 years ago. It was upgraded to a Genuine Professional Windows and I have the upgrade key. Also, I checked the updates on this computer. It is completely updated. It looks like this is a scam to trick me to make an unnecessary purchase. The problem is, the message keeps popping up whenever I need to use the computer. Is there a way to get rid of the message? I appreciate any ideas. Regards |

Unless there has been some damage to your OS, you've probably managed to install some malware on your system (which could also have done some damage to your OS). I suggest a full system scan with a good antivirus program is in order.
PS: Since this is a Windows issue, not a Word issue, I've moved your post to the Windows forum.

Thanks Macropod
Dear Macropod,
Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, after running a complete System scan with Norton and restart, the aggressive message disappeared for a while, but it came back. Kind regards. Last edited by macropod; 12-14-2014 at 05:35 AM. Reason: Removed grossly-oversize formatting |

Your system probably has some damaged files. To resolve this, run a full CHKDSK:
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories Right-click on the Command Prompt entry and select 'Run as Administrator'. Accept the UAC prompt, after which the Command Prompt window should display. At the Command prompt, type: CHKDSK C: /R and press Enter. You will be told that the drive is locked and CHKDSK will run at the next boot. Press Y, then reboot. CHKDSK could take a few hours to run, depending on the size of the drive, so don't just sit there waiting for it for finish any time soon! During the process it may find & repair some damaged files (good). After CHKDSK has finished, Windows should boot normally.

Problem resolved, aggressive message disappeared
Hi Macropod,
Thanks for the valuable advice. It happened again. After applying your idea, the computer was given enough time to repair the errors, then it was rebooted. The aggressive message disappeared for a short while then it appeared. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Kind regards. |

Hi
Quote:
That leaves to suggestions: Either you didn't check on all drives in use (flash-sticks as well !!!) Or malware is generated by a file which Norton couldn't detect. In this case try another antivirus-programm. Check the report for getting more information on the type of malware which is found. Cheers |

I had an issue with a previous computer which was running genuine Windows where I received a similar message all of a sudden. It looked legitimate and after checking for virus' and spyware, I ended up going to the Microsoft website and running the validation tool which fixed the problem. Might be worth a try.
Go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows/genuine and click the Validate Now button at the bottom of the page. If it comes back as validated you know your OS is ok. Can you post a screen shot of the offending message? I would try scanning with a different antivirus and spyware program. Avast have their 2015 antivirus for free (www.avast.com) which I've found to be reliable. |
