Lap top screen is black
We have an HP lap top. The computer is on. The fan is running and there are lights flashing on some of the buttons. The screen is completely black though. Any suggestions on how to get this working again? Thanks, Tammy |

There can be several issues.
Try this, unplug it, take out the battery, and hold down the "on" button for 30 seconds or so to drain the capacitors. Then plug it back in, and try to turn it on. (with or without the battery doesn't matter at this point). If that works (it's called de-gausing I think), then you might have to do it again several weeks or months from now. If that doesn't work, you probably need to send it out to have the motherboard "re-flowed", the solder connections inside can get loose over time. HTH, Gary |

If you get nothing at all on the screen (no BIOS screen, no HP logo, nothing) then I would think that the screen is broken. Do you get any picture at all- a faint ghosting, if you look carefully? If ot is an older lappy (3/4 years or more) a broken screen would not be unlikely. there is an invetor unit that feeds the screen backlight, and these can often go. Best bet would be get a professional to lok at it- repairs on laptops are difficult to say the least if you have little or no experience, and a pro shop can usually tell you fairly quickly (and hopefully cheaply) where the fault lies- chances are that its probably a better bet (if its older) to go for a new model, as repairs can often be worth than the original is worth.
