Default Unable to open or delete an empty folder

I have a folder on my desktop which I cannot open of delete. Properties say it is empty. When I try to open it says Access Denied (5), select Access. When I select Access, I get UAC to which I say YES and it then says An Error occurred modifying permissions: Access Denied (5).

This was originally a set of folders containing many image files which I no longer needed and attempted to delete. Apparently something went wrong during the deletion and a single sub-sub-folder of the parent is now empty but cannot be accessed or deleted.

Using Win 7 Pro 64 bit.
Any ideas about how to get rid of it?

Hi Zimm,

I'd suggest re-starting Windows, then logging on with a user account that has Administrator privileges. Re-starting Windows will make sure that whatever programs might have had the folder open get closed and logging on with a user account that has Administrator privileges should ensure you'll have whatever elevated user permissions the folder might have gained.

Hi Paul,
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I have restarted Windows and logged in with the only account which has Administrator privileges. There are no other programs operating. It still refuses to permit Access or change or deletion or anything at all. It has obviously become corrupted in some fashion and is marked as being in use by an unknown user and administrator. How can one delete such a file?????

You may have to re-start Windows in Safe mode or, failing that, Safe mode with command prompt, to delete the folder.

To re-start Windows in Safe mode hold down the F8 key while your system powers up.

Thanks Paul. That deleted it. It never occurred to me that safe mode would defeat the UAC system. Interestingly, in Safe Mode with the command prompt the folder did not even exist. I had to go to the simple safe GUI mode to delete it. Glad I didn't pay Microsoft $99 to do it for me.
