Question Tags on user defined shapes

Hello,
most of the Spapes in Visio have Tags, which can be easely displayd or not via the right mouse button. There is also the possibility to switch off all the tags for the whole diagramm via the menue.

But some shape does not have Tags, the interface tag for example. And is there the possibility to have Tags on userdefined shapes? Please see also my example file (I changed the file extension to vsdx, as I can not upload vsdx files here.)

Thanks, and a nice day for you all.

Exclamation The answer from GPT

No, Microsoft Visio does not have built-in functionality to add tags to user-defined shapes. In Visio, shapes are typically used to represent objects or elements in a diagram, and they do not inherently support tagging or metadata. However, you can achieve a similar effect by using shape data fields or custom properties.
Shape data fields allow you to associate data with shapes in Visio. You can define custom data fields and assign values to them for individual shapes. This data can act as tags or metadata for your shapes. To add shape data fields to a shape, you can use the Shape Data window in Visio, which allows you to define and assign values to the data fields.
Custom properties provide another way to associate additional information with shapes. You can define custom properties for shapes and assign values to them. These properties can act as tags or metadata for your shapes. To add custom properties to a shape, you can use the ShapeSheet in Visio and define custom cells for the shape.
By utilizing shape data fields or custom properties, you can add tags or metadata to your user-defined shapes in Visio. This allows you to associate additional information with the shapes and enhance their functionality and organization within your diagrams.

Your attached doc shows shapes with text fields but I'm not exactly sure on what exactly it is that you are asking about 'tags'.

Does this page shed any light on what you wanted to do? Link Fields to Subshape Text – Visio Guy

Hi Andrew,
thanks for your reply. The difference between normal text fields and tags is, that you can easely hide all tags (clicking the right mouse button on an empty space of your drawing sheet) or a single tag of one component (clicking the right mouse button on a specific component). See attached files, sorry I did not manage to change the language, it must sound like "Hide Component Tags". And my problem is, that I do not have these tags on userdefined shaps.
Thanks for the link, maybe this will solve my problem. But for that I need more than a quiet minute.

OK, now I see what you are trying to do. I don't have Visio Professional so I don't have the template or stencils you are using but I can examine the shapes in your attached file to see what is happening. If you examine the Shapesheet for the first item on your page, you can see how many settings are involved in the Tag attribute.

You will need to replicate all those relevant shapesheet settings on each of your custom shapes in order to get the same functionality. Note that this will require entries in User-defined Cells, Actions, Miscellaneous and Text Fields (and possibly other sections of the shapesheet).

In the attached image of that shapesheet you can see that the visibility of the tag is linked to a property of ThePage which is why you are able to set all of the tags to show/hide with a single setting change at the Page Level.

Thumbs up

Thanks. Now I know what I have to do. I thought there would be an easier way, but I think I will mangage it.

It might be worth exploring if it is quicker to edit a copy of one of the built-in shapes and replace its geometry. That would save a lot of time and reduce the likelihood that you've missed on of the important parts.

In my opinion, the hardest part will be the child shapes within (each of which will have its own shapesheet) - that adds another level of complexity that makes you appreciate how long it takes to develop these 'simple looking' functionalities.

This is a good hint, for an easier way. I will try it.
