Default Visio 2d Shapes from Excel Data(height & length)

Hello,
I am trying to generate shapes/stencils from data from an excel file but can seem to figure it out. I have an equipment list excel file that contains dimensions of hundreds of different pieces of equipment. The data in the excel file consist of: type of equipment, length, width, height, weights. Is it possible for visio to generate 2d shapes based on the length and width data as well as display the following inside the shape:
Type of equipment
Dimensions
Weight

Pulling the data from an excel file would save me several hours rather than manually creating each shape.

Many thanks!

I'm pretty sure it would be possible to do this. Each shape would need a name so you probably need the excel data to include that if you want the users to know what they are dragging onto the page.

However, in the interests of being efficient, you may only need one shape and just populate the variable settings via shape data as you add the shape to the page. If you were using the Visio Professional version of Visio you could import the excel data as a datasheet for efficiency too.

Post sample Visio and Excel files if you want a working demo made up.

If you want to put the text INSIDE the shape then you will need to work out a scale that works for both the smallest and largest sizes. You will have more flexibility if the text is sitting beside the shapes or your shapes are using a more complex formula to set absolute minimum or maximum sizes. For instance, your shape's height could be set to
Code:
=BOUND(Prop.Width,0,FALSE,10 mm,100 mm)
where Prop.Width is a Shape Data Field, 10mm is the minimum size of the shape, 100mm is the maximum size of the shape.
