Angry Shape data resets!!

I have tried this multiple times and get the same result that looks to me like a SW error in Visio. In short, shape data get clobbered if you alter the sort keys for a shape data set. Here's how I can easily recreate the problem:

1.Draw a couple shapes.
2.Via the Shape Data Task pane, open the Shape Data Sets task pane.
3.Either create a simple Shape Data Set or use the sample if one exists. Create a few different items in the shape data set using the Define Shape Data window, giving a label and type but no sort key. Labels can be something like "Property1" "Property2" etc. for each entity. Really it doesn't matter.
4. Close the Define Shape window and apply the shape data set to all of the shapes on the sheet.
5. For the different shapes, using the shape data task pane enter at least one unique entry for the one of the dataset properties.
6. Select all the shapes and use Edit Data Graphic to display one or all of the shape data. At the very least, have the data graphic display the shape data unique to each shape.
7. You should now have a few shapes with data graphics for each shape showing their unique property.
8.Deselect everything.
9. Go back into the shape data set by clicking on the data set you created in the shape data set task pane and clicking define.
10. Add sort keys to change how the data is displayed in the shape data window. I often want to do this when adding data to the shape data set. I want the data displayed in an organized fashion, not however Visio wants to do it (which I think is alphabetical), so just use numbers, one unique number for each sort key. This seems like a normal thing to do right???
11. Click okay once you've altered all the sort keys. You should see your items sorted differently per the sort keys in the shape data window if you click on a shape. You should also see the data graphic still shows the correct data that you entered in step 5. However, the shape data task pane will show the data for that shape, however now properly organized, is gone!

This is so very odd because the shape data graphic is still showing the right data, but the shape data task pane is pointed in the wrong direction.

I spent days creating a big database using shapes thinking I could just add new items on the fly to the shape data set that is common to all shapes. As true as that is, if I want to then reorganize how they are displayed in the shape data window using set keys, all the data for the shapes is obliterated, though oddly, as I pointed out, the data graphic somehow retains its data.

HELP!
