Hi, I'm looking to automatically create an organisation chart on Microsoft Visio from my company's data which is stored on Microsoft Azure Active Directory. Is this possible?
The only solution I can think of is to manually input the data into Excel and then import to Visio, however, this is obviously very time-consuming and not feasible for a company with 350+ employees. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

What do you know about VBA? Can you make a SQL query connection to the AD to return the fields you will need? At a minimum you need the person's name and who they work for.

Hi Guessed,
To be honest with you, I know very little about the software I'm using (I didn't even know Microsoft Visio existed until 3 weeks ago...). From my interpretation of your message, it seems the issue may be to do with a lack of a SQL database connection? Is this something that's needed to connect between Visio and Azure Active Directory to import data? |

There are multiple ways to work with database content to automate the creation of graphics in Visio. In the case of Organisation charts, you may be lucky because there is an automated wizard available. To get to this particular wizard you need to create a new document using the Organization Chart template (in the Business section). This will open with a series of dialog windows that guides you through connecting to your data source and selecting the necessary fields.
Youtube videos can give you an idea on how that works visio org chart wizard tutorial - Google Search If this doesn't work for your requirements it is also possible to do it via VBA but it is not anywhere near as simple. If you have the Visio Professional version (rather than Visio Standard) you can import database data into a Visio file and possibly could then turn that into a graphic. I haven't used the Pro version for many years but from memory I think it is likely to be an avenue to explore.
