Default How to make all four corners rounded?

Hello all!

I was changing the shape's corners to become rounded. But the upper-left corner stays pointed. May I ask how to make all four corners rounded?

The visio template I chose was from the organization chart. I do know that if I used a 'blank' template, then I do get access to shapes that are square or rectangle, and applying rounding to those particular shapes will round all four corners.

But for this particular organizational chart with these rectangular shapes ....... I'm currently stuck with three rounded corners, and one pointy corner.

Thanks very much

The glib answer is 'it is complicated'. You have chosen a specific shape with a specific style applied to it. And your document has a theme and a variant applied as well. Then you have local "Format Shape" settings which are also interacting to set the look of the shape.

The simple way to solve the problem is to use a shape which does respond to your shape's format settings. Or change the Theme and Variant on the Design tab and see what happens.

The more involved way is to look at that shape's ShapeSheet and look at the Geometry settings and see why the theme is having an effect. If you can't work out the particular setting that is protecting that corner of the shape, you can load a sample document here so someone can take a look at the variables.

Thanks for your time and help Andrew! I'm still a bit new to Visio, but did look around in the shapesheet ----- but no luck so far with homing into the section that controls this behaviour of retaining one pointy edge.

I will keep looking around in there.

I have also uploaded a Visio 2019 Pro sample document - where I applied the corner-preset to the box that says 'chief of staff' --- where the upper-left corner just stays pointy.

Thanks again!

OK, so I found where the settings are coming from and can describe how to fix it but I'm not sure you really want to go fiddling there because the settings are very deep in the tree. The shape masters are complicated things and that shape in particular is a nested (group inside a group inside a group) structure where each shape (or group) has its own shapesheet.

I don't know how much you know about Visio so bear with me because I will include some background info in order to describe the editing steps.

We can modify that one shape but the corner will still be there when people add the same shape master again so it is best to modify the master. To do this, go to your Shapes Pane and choose More Shapes > Show Document Stencil. In that stencil, right click on the Manager Shapetacular > Edit Master > Edit Master Shape. This will open a new window showing just that shape master.

Next you need to ensure you can see the Master Explorer. If you don't see that popup, you can turn it on by going to the Developer Tab and checking it there. If you don't see the Developer Tab, you can turn it on in the File > Options > Customize Ribbon.

The Master Explorer shows a tree view and you keep clicking on the + buttons to expose all the children shapes inside this shape. You need to find the very last child shape called Sheet.9 and right click it and select Show Shapesheet.

In the window that appears, scroll to see the section called Geometry 1. Right click on Row 8 and select Delete Row. Do the same to Rows 7 then 6 then 5. Now select the Y cell in Row 4 and delete all that text and change it to "=Height". It should now look like this...

Close the shape sheet and then close the Shape Window. You will be asked if you want to update the master and all instances - choose Yes.

Hi Andrew! Thanks so much for your time for guiding me through that method for undoing the feature that preserved the pointy upper-left corner of those rectangular shapes whenever I attempted to apply corner-rounding.

I successfully followed your procedure - one of the most well-written procedures I've seen. Those shapes now have rounded corners on all four sides when I now apply the rounding.

Absolutely appreciated your time and help Andrew. I'll keep your procedure in a safe area on my computer (and will back up to other spots too - eg. my emails)! Thanks again!
