Default Need advice about drawing to scale

I need to use Visio to draw a 198ftx220 ft rectangle made up of 36 square x 40 squares of 5.5ft x 5.5ft size each (copy attached). The complete drawing will contain 16 of these rectangles in a 4x4 matrix. How do I scale it accurately in Visio to fit on a 17x11 sheet?

Visio has all the tools needed to work this out quickly.

Firstly, create a new document and choose US metrics
Then open the Page Setup dialog via Design > Page Setup Dialog Launcher (little icon in bottom right of the first group on the Ribbon)
In the Page Setup dialog:
3. Print Setup Paper size should be C Sheet: 17 in x 22 in
4. Page size should be Custom size to match the 17x22
5&6. Drawing Scale should be Custom scale around 1 in = 12 ft

You can see the scaled size of the page while adjusting the custom scale. Choose a scale to allow the page size to be greater than the page size because you will need a border around the objects you place on the page because printers won't print right to the edge of the paper.

Thank you. This scaling will allow me to draw one of these rectangles. I apologize for not being clear about the complete drawing which will contain 400 of these rectangles in a 20x20 matrix as shown in this picture. Seems like I will need a different scale for the overall 3,960 ft x 4,400 ft drawing.

Thank you. Forgive me for my limited knowledge of Visio. I have used these directions to create a key building block of 198ftx220ft. I can't figure out how to change the color of its outside border only.

Next I need to make a 5x5 matrix of this shape and then make its border even darker. Finally, I need to make a 4x4 matrix of that bigger shape which will be 3,960 ft x 4,400 ft.

To fit the final large shape on a 11x17 page and leaving 1" border, I'll need to scale it to 1"=396ft. Should I start with that scale?

If you need a 1 inch border around the page then I would set the Paper Size to 17x22 but the Page Size to 15x20

Note that the ratio of 15x20 doesn't match the ratio of 3960x4400 so there will be additional border spaces on the long length of the paper. You can experiment with the scaling to get the 3960ft to fit exactly on the Page. Alternatively, you can use a calculator and do 3960/15 to discover a scale of 1in = 264ft will exactly fit the 'usable' page area.

In terms of placing the shapes on the page, start with a square that measures 3960/20 = 198ft. This will give you the smallest box. I would add the text at this time because you don't want to have to do that after you have duplicated it 400 times.

Once you have the smallest box created, you can duplicate it into a 5x5 matrix. I would create a separate box to overlay and give you the heavier outside border. That group can then be duplicated in the 4x4 matrix.

Thank you. It works like a charm. Now I need to figure out how to overlay a curvy road and measure the approximate road frontage of every 198ftx220ft shape it intersects at an angle.

This webpage will give you info on how you can get Visio to report on the length of a freeform line.
Simple Cabling Shape with Length Reporting – Visio Guy

You will need to break the line into separate segments if you need to get measurements of pieces of the line.
