Org chart depth limited to 46 shapes
It seems that the Visio Org chart has a depth limit of around 46 shapes. I am trying to use it to create test scripts, but am limited by this to scripts with 22 steps or fewer (One shape for test step, another for result).
Is this correct, and can it be increased? |

I haven't seen this limit and have created WBS trees (which look the same as org charts) with hundreds of shapes. Those graphics don't make chains as complex as 46 levels though.
Is this really a process flow you are talking about or an Org Chart? Can you describe the steps you are making to run into the limitation you are finding?

Org chart depth
Thanks for replying. The restriction is the number of levels, not the number of shapes in the chart. I am building a tree structure with each branch being a test cases. Several test cases may start the same, but branch out lower down, when different conditions are tested.

Are you using a wizard to do your graphic build or are you using a vba macro?
If you can provide an example table of data I can do some testing to see whether a macro has the same limitations.

Org chart depth limit
HI, I am using VBA. Even when I try and amend the chart manually, it doesn't work properly.
Thanks Neil |

What version of Visio are you using? I've got Visio Standard 2016 Build 1910 and don't have the same problem with the Org Chart template.

It is the one installed at the office, which is Visio standard 13. I don't have permission to upgrade. Maybe it has been fixed since.
Cheers Neil BTW I have a cousin in Canberra - I think that's where you are |

Yes, I'm often in Canberra for work but live in Melbourne.
Have you tried using shapes other than the Org Chart shapes? If you are using vba to build it then you could just as easily choose a flowchart shape which might behave differently.

There is too much code to rewrite. And I am not sure whether other shapes will work properly on an org chart.I still need the org chart functionality to work for editing the resulting chart.
I am uploading test scripts from Excel. These are either created directly from the requirements, or by importing existing scripts. Anyway, I think it is not related to the shape type. Thanks. Neil |

OK, perhaps you might want to show me the code you are using. It shouldn't be difficult to change shape masters. For instance, in this code extract the choice of shape master is on one line.
Code:
With appVisio If .Documents.Count > 0 And Not bNewDoc Then Set aDoc = .ActiveDocument Set aPage = aDoc.Pages.Add Else Set aDoc = .Documents.Add(Filename:=sTemplatePath & sVisioTemplate) Set aPage = .ActivePage End If Set aDocStencil = GetDocStencil(appVisio, sStencil, sStencilPath) 'Load Stencil 'Clear page for new shapes to be added Do While aPage.Shapes.Count > 0 aPage.Shapes(1).Delete Loop aPage.AutoSize = False Set aMast = aDocStencil.Masters(sMaster) On Error Resume Next For Each aRow In loWBS.DataBodyRange.SpecialCells(xlCellTypeVisible).Rows Debug.Print Trim(aRow.Cells(1).Value) lRow = lRow + 1 lLeftStep = aRow.Cells(3).Value If lRow > 1 Then sParent = Trim(aRow.Cells(4).Value) If bJoin And sParent <> "" Then Set aShp = aPage.DropConnected(aMast, aPage.Shapes("WBS_" & sParent), 2) 'visAutoConnectDirDown=2 Else lPosY = lPosY - lPrevShapeHeight - dblSpacing Set aShp = aPage.Drop(aMast, 1 + lLeftStep / 2, lPosY) ' 10 - lRow / 3 lPrevShapeHeight = aShp.CellsU("Height") End If aShp.Name = "WBS_" & Trim(aRow.Cells(1).Value) For i = LBound(arrProps) To UBound(arrProps) sProp = "Prop." & arrProps(i) aShp.CellsU(sProp).FormulaU = Chr(34) & Trim(aRow.Cells(i + 1).Value) & Chr(34) Next Next aRow

Thanks Andrew, but I am straying too far from the problem.
I will just live with the restriction - maybe someone in Microsoft will accept that it exists. My code base is too big to meddle with. I already break things when I try improvements Regards Neil |
