Unlisted stencils in Visio 2010
I've just replaced Visio 2002 w/ 2010 so that Visio may behave properly in Windows 10. The primary reason is to work on a drawing made in 2002 that used the Building Plan\Planting stencil. That stencil does not appear in the My Shapes listing. It does appear, however, in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\Visio Content\1033 as PLANT_M.VSS. Along with a multitude of other .VSS files that don't seem to appear in shapes listing.
It is, of course, possible to add the ...\Visio Content\1033 folder as the location of stencils. But the the names provided in My Shapes are just the file names rather than the more descriptive titles of the stencils. My question, then, is there any way to get a more complete listing of available stencils in the My Shapes listing? Or do I just have poke about in the 1033 folder when looking doe something in particular? |

Just putting the stencils in that folder won't get them to be seen by Visio. You need to put them in the My Shapes folder under your My Documents. The correct way to install new stencils is via an installer (.msi) file. This file will contain publish information that tells Visio which category the stencil will be under as well as the display name of the stencil i.e. the bit that transforms the name PLANT_M.VSS to Planting.

Thanks. I see than copying a stencil into the MyShapes folder makes it accessible. What is not at all clear is, for example, how to organize PLANT* into the Building Plan category. The modify option in Apps and Features for Visio does not apply. Is there a specific .msi one needs to use?
My workaround is to copy into MyShapes the entire stencil folder from Visio 2002. A lot of redundancy, though. |

Under the My Shapes folder create a new folder with the name of the category you want in to be in. Any depth of folders can be created i.e. Plans -> Garden -> Plants
The msi file has to be created using a tool for that purpose. Not difficult once you are used to the process and the tools that are used. You will also probably need access to a code-signing certificate. |

I can do the first part. Creating an msi is outside of my skill set and will probably stay that way.
And thanks. |
