Default Change Date Format in Gantt Chart

I am using Visio 2013 and have created a Gantt chart from the standard template. I would like the start and finish dates on the chart to display the date format {{MMM-yy}}. I go into Define Shape Data, change the Type to Date and the Format to {{MMM-yy}}. The date displayed is unchanged. Any ideas on how to update this?

Wouldn't Excel be a better software to create a Gantt chart? Normally, that is not one of Visio's useful products...although, if you are creative enough Visio may work.

The Visio template is a lot better than the Excel one
