Losing data when converting to a PDF
Hello all,
I am new here and didn't notice a what not to post thread so please let me know if I am putting this in the wrong section or violating some type of rule. My problem: I have a file I am working on that I have set up in a large plotter format. My page is setup to be 108"X36"(9'X3'). I have section of the drawing done and need to output it to a PDF. I have tried every way possible to save the file out to PDF. It comes up like it is saving the file and saves it very fast. (Almost to fast for the amount of detail.) I have saved it at least 20 different times changing settings along the way. Some times when I open the PDF it gives me and error saying something is corrupt or missing and I need to contact author of the PDF file. The biggest issue is that it isn't saving everything that is on my Visio drawing. It's like it saved random parts all across the drawing. Is there a setting I need to change some where to make this work? All of my small drawings seem to save fine but this large one is giving me problems. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Also I am using Window 7 32bit, Office 2013, and Adobe Reader. |

Is your drawing completely on one page/tab? Have you tried to "group" the complete drawing so as not to miss anything prior to converting to .pdf? What about copying & grouping the portion of the drawing needed to convert to .pdf and making it a separate file...then converting to .pdf?

I just recently retired from network engineering work where I used both AutoCAD and Visio, often duplicating drawings in both software applications (including conversion to .pdf) and, I must admit that since retiring, I have lost a step or two trying to remember just exactly what I would do if I were in your shoes.
The only question I can think of with respect to the missing items is do you have the layers turned off in the Visio drawing? Wish I could be more helpful... |

Jim, I went in to look at the Layers. I have to say I don't know much about the layers but I know I started the drawing from scratch and some of the boxes that are missing were copied and pasted all at the same time. Some of them show up and some do not. I would think if it was a layer problem all the boxes I copied and pasted would either be there or not be there. As I said I am new to layers so I may be wrong. I did go under view>Layer properties and checked all the boxes under Active and color. The only boxes left unchecked was "Lock". Then I went and saved it as a PDF again. The file was still missing all the same parts. I saved it out to a DWG and DXF. The problem with doing that is I lose all my colors so some items like servers don't show up. That will get me close enough to redraw if I have to but they really want the finale product done in Visio. I appreciate all your help. |

Jim, I looked over the settings and they are the same as yours. I tried to attach the PDF and the Visio file but the PDF is to big and I don't see VSD files in the list. The VSD file is 13.2 MB so I doubt it would meet the file size even if I could. So I did a screen shot of what I am seeing with the Visio file and the PDF. I had to chop off a little of the Visio file to get it under the 300kb. I am not sure the pictures will help you much. All the boxes you see in the Visio file where copied from each other then I changed the colors and label. If you want I can email you the file if you want to send me a good email address through a PM. |

Okay, I sent you a PM with email address. Those drawing (while I cannot see too much) looks like my field of work up until a year ago. Will await you email w/drawings. Remember, I have Visio 2003...so, make sure it is save to that version or earlier (should not be any problems).
