Lines with Unwanted Endpoints
I've encountered a recurring and seemingly random problem. Sometimes when I draw lines, using the "line" tool I get a different shape, a line which has endpoints - a box when you have the shape selected, not a diamond. Sometimes those are not even the end of the line, they appear part way along the line.
This creates a problem for me, as mostly I want to be able to move the "points" at the end of or along the line. If one of them is an endpoint then the whole "shape" moves with the, rotating or changing size. I created and example, and turned on developer to see what was different in about the shapes. On a drawings I was working on I had a line, with a right-angle bend, where the "corner" of the bend was an endpoint. I tried to recreate this but couldn't. That's when I turned developer on, the shape in question was Line Groups.vsd:Page1:Sheet.21<SHAPE>. I then created an apparently identical line, but this has no endpoint. This was Line Groups.vsd:Page1:Sheet.21<SHAPE>. Inspecting the shape sheet (that's on the Developer tab) it shows that .21 has a "1-D Endpoints" section and a "Group properties" section on the shape sheet. Whereas .22 doesn't. Of course I have no more idea how .21 happened and then why .22 happened. My normal way to overcome this is simply to redraw the line that shows the endpoints. However, I can see that sometimes it would, or might, be useful to have endpoints on shapes I create using the line drawing tool. So it would be useful to know. Equally, and for most of the time far more use would be to convert or remove the endpoint when it happens and I don't want it. And the ultimate would be to know and prevent it happening in the first place! Does anyone have any idea for this? I've attached, hopefully, a power point which says the above and includes screen shots for the shapes, which should show what I mean. Thanks |

Why not attach the Visio drawing itself? It would be more useful. Also, are you creating the original lines and shapes or are you copying them from another drawing or stencil?

Hi Jim
Ok, good point! The problem never appears when using copy and paste, i.e. if the line is "good" then copy and paste doesn't introduce the problem. I've attached an example, within the zip. But I think I have now resolved why this happens, or at least one way to cause it. To create the sample I had to randomly, at first, draw lines. Part way through this I spotted why it happened, or at least a way to make it happen. 1) Draw a single line segment - this will have endpoints at each end, i.e. square box terminations. 2) Add a new point part way along the line, i.e. <ctrl>click. The line will have a diamond marker at the new point and endpoints square boxes at each end. 3) Extend the line from either endpoint. 4) the resulting line now an "endpoint" part way through the line You can also close the line to form solid shape, and the endpoints are retained around the perimeter of the shape. 6, 7 and 8 in the attached have erroneous endpoints. 1..5 don't. What I can't be sure of is whether there are other ways to cause this. But at least I have one method to create, and therefore I had a method to avoid the issue. Cheers |

Well, after looking at your attachment...I cannot answer why your 1 - 5 examples do not have the connection points...other than questioning if they were drawing with the "connector tool" or not. If they were not...there is your answer. If they were...there is a question.
I must say that I only have version 2003 available to me (I retired over a year ago and have not updated). |
