Default Floor maps and best practices

At my company we have a database that tracks, amongst other things, rooms in our offices. It's surprisingly common that a room gets repurposed and its name is subsequently changed. Therefore I have to change the name in the database and then on the floor maps. So I'm starting to redraw our maps in Visio and plan on linking the rooms to objects in our database. The trouble I'm having is figuring out what to link the Room object to.

Because rooms, obviously, have shared walls no room is a self-contained object. So then I thought, well make each room it's own object with no shared walls and then just have the shared walls overlap, but this seems like bad practice because it creates redundancy and doesn't allow for the rooms to bind to one another's geometry.

What's the best way to approach this?

Thank you.
