Thank you all
Macropod, your suggestion to look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541 actually solved the problem. It was not any of the keys that they mention there but the key about blocked files under security. Once that was removed, Word works like a charm

Default Undoing MS Office 2003 file blocks

The MS Support article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810 has some useful info on undoing the blocking of various file formats in Office 2003 programs (open and save) by updating the registry settings. They worked for me!

Hello, I am hoping you can help. I have the EXACT same problem that you did with saving in Word 2010 that I just installed. I tried to use the link that helped you but I can't seem to locate how to fix it. Do you remember what you did? Thanks!!

I'd just like to thank you for this. I had the exact same issue and this worked perfectly.
