Default Can I split the color of text in front of a shape?

I have a word in front of a shape. The letters extend to either side of the shape. The text is black and the shape is black. Is there a way to change the color of the text to white where it overlaps the shape? So that the word is perfectly readable? IS this something that can be done in Publisher?
