Default Numbering first column in table - Possible?

I am trying to autonumber a table, but I dont want to number it across, I want the first column of the table to have the numbering.



In Word it works by simply highlighting the first column down and it populates with numbers. In Publisher, if I highlight the first column, it populates the whole column with 1's...
