I have a client that has MS Project files stored on a Windows 2008 Standard 64 bit server that is accessed by users over a network. The files can take up to 10 minutes to load and sometimes Project just freezes. The server that stores the files is also the DC and Exchange 2007 Server. An error does come up sometimes saying: “There was a problem sending the command to the program”. MS Project is installed locally on the PCs (running XP and Windows 7) and on a Terminal Server. The Terminal and File Server are both 2008 virtuals hosted on a Hyper-V 2008 server. The Terminal Server is able to open the files a lot quicker, but there is still a delay of up to a minute for Project files that have multiple links to other files. If you copy and paste the Project file locally it opens in 1 or 2 seconds. All PCs and Servers are plugged into the same Net Gear FS700TS switch. We have inherited this setup from a previous IT company, so I am not sure of the quality of the FS700TS switch.

Things I have tried:

1. Opening from a non-domain account – same freezing issue, which rules out folder redirection

2. Setting a global exception for all users in their AV to exclude any real-time scanning of the folder where the Project files are located

3. Opened files from a PC without AV on it at all

4. Added changes to registry (found in MS 829700)



5. Tested other types of files (pdf, excel, word, etc.) and nothing else has any issues (even files that are much larger than the Project files.

Not sure if you still have the problem but it sounds like you have a corrupt project plan.
Try cutting and pasting all your tasks into a new project file.
