How is total duration calculated and what causes the variation between duration & total duration
I am fairly new to MS projects and after preparing a project plan, I was asked why was there a duration between the 2 fields i.e Duration & Total duration.
I initially assumed that the total duration field is a rolling calendar day sum but I dont think that is the case. At a high level, my project plan has a duration of 225 days where as total duration is at 864 days. Also This varies across the different indent tasks. Some the former is higher than the latter and its the opposite in some cases. Please help understand what going on |

Your "Duration" field calculates the difference between Start & Finish dates, while your "Total Duration" field sums up the duration of sub-tasks under a Summary task.
Did you inherit the schedule? Just curious as to why you would add a field to the schedule if you don't know what it does. BTW, I want to believe your "Total Duration" is a custom field and not a default Microsoft Project field as it is not listed in the list of duration fields.
