Default Project reverts to 8 hours for first working day with a 9 hour calendar

I have started a new programme and changed the calendar to a 9 hour working day. However, Project shows the first working day as 8 hours with the remainder as 9. If I change the hours on the resource usage sheet from 8 to 9 the Gantt chart then shows a duration of 0.89 days Can anyone help with this?
