Resource scheduling

I've recently installed MS Project professional and want to use it as a resource tracker rather than a project tracker, what is the best way to go about this? I used an older version of project a few years back and this was how we used it. On the newer version I can't seem to get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
