scheduling by both Machine And People
Hi all
I am a complete newbie to Microsoft Project so i am hoping i will be able to get some help :-) I am a production planner and baiscally i shedull work for 2o people. We have about 30 machines that are grouped into 3 categories. What i am after is a way of being able to use project to be able to tell me that i have x amount of labour per day, and then i can then plan jobs onto the available machines. I need it to recognise that certain machines only run certain jobs so for example machine 1 might be used and therefore if another job uses machine 1 it will have to wait until the next day All the time i need it to keep track of how many labour hours i am using for that day and not let me overplan Is this possible? i am not sure if the people should be the resource or the machines? Many Thanks for any help Chris |

Yes, it is possible.
you can enter each task (operation) in the programme, then allocate a resource to it. This gives you the basic layout. You can also set the level of resource available, and then level out resources to see overall duration. By setting priority levels, you can choose which tasks will have resources allocated to them first (most important job) and see the overall effect of labour levels. what Project will NOT do is tell you that you have x amount of labour- that always has to come from you. Specifics at this point we cant give, for 2 main reasons; 1) Not enough info 2) Trying to learn Project from a forum is not easy. I would suggest learning at least the basics, as trying to explain the entire procedure would be very long, and probably not very beneficial as you wouldnt be able to change it |

I will also add a bit - unfortunately Project works with each resource as an individual - so it isn't possible to tell Project only schedule Task A when both Machine1 and Marvin the Machine 1 operator is available. You can use leveling - but it will separate the machine and Marvin. Look carefully at what the leveling command result is.
