physical % complete
hi - hope someone can telll me: I have a project with work loaded say 10000 hrs over a duration over a few years. When I progress the plan with Physical % complete over a month period say 2%. The value in actual work hrs is different to that when I divide the 10000hrs by the 2%. Any reason why? |

Hi Andy,
Unless the work is progressing at an even pace throughout the entire project, the % complete - which is a duration measure - will not equal the % work complete. For example in the beginning of a project you may not have as many hours expended in each month as you may have later in the project when more resources join. So, you may have progressed 2% of the total duration, but because of backloaded resources, you have not consumed 2% of the total work. Look a the task usage view, add work to the timescaled portion zoom out and look at your work load per month. |

physical % complete
Hi Julie, we are using a standard Level of Effort ( as a rule of credit) for the activity. What i cant fathom out is if I have loaded the work hrs for the project duration 10000. I have then progressed the phys % from 0 to 2%. I would of expected the actual No of hrs to = 1000/2% = 200 hrs. what the actual is showing me is 196hrs. which is giving me a false EVM calcuation.

I'm not sure that the Physical % complete ties in with actual work values. The Earned Value is either calculated from % complete (duration) or physical % complete - but not % work complete. When I create a simple project and set things up to use Physical % complete as the earned value method (both the field and the calculation), updating Physical % complete has no effect on Actual Work. The actual work values remain zero.
