Default Is there an elegant simple way to create cost projections in Microsoft Project?

Is there a simple way to show a quantity of a certain resource associated with a task. For example, I work with a lot of union workers on my projects. For one task I may use 3 pipefitters and a millwright. Further their may be a general foreman that is overseeing the task.

So a 10 hour task would include 30 manhours for the pipefitters, 10 manhours for millwrights and 5 manhours for the general foreman.

I have set up all these resources with their rates in the resources view. In the end I am interested in creating cost projections based on the manhours times rate, but I do not want to effect the overall durations of each task.

Is there an elegant system for doing this?

Set the tasks as fixed duration. Assign the resources and enter the work when you assign the resource. (I'd use the Task Form shown in the lower pane). It will calculate the cost based upon work (per resource rate * work).

As an alternative, you could use resources as materials. This is independent of time. I have used this often for Activity schedule works and it can often be more useful, depending on the situation.
