Default Master project - subprojects and key milestones

Hi all
Just started a new gig as an analyst whereby I am automating project reporting through VBA, Project and Excel. After 3 days the Master Scheduler quit and I have had to take on that role until someone else is found.
I have done the role before but there is nothing worse than picking up someone elses work so I just wanted to clarify a couple of things.
We are using 2016 Pro, and around 50 projects which were created by the master scheduler. Lowest level first, There is a key milestone section in each of the (to be subprojects) linked to relevant tasks. (1st duplication of effort scenario as any completion or percentage updates have to be carried up to the linked milestones (no hammocking).
Subsequently, each of these projects has been inserted into a master project, with each of the sub project key milestones, linked to another section within the master schedule (2nd duplication of effort) as any updates to the subprojects is not carried up to the master section which was created manually.
In terms of removing this triplication of manual updates, I would normally, tag each key milestone in each sub project as Level 1, 2, or 3), insert them into the Master and leave it at that and use a filter to gain a similar representation.
Isnt this the way to normally set up a master project and hence every update is driven from the lower level schedules?
Cheers
S

In a quick read it does appear that the former scheduler was approaching it in a fairly convoluted fashion. Insert the subprojects, and apply filters to show what you need.

If would also suggest only updating the subprojects and let those updates roll up to the master. The best option is to create a unlinked master for reporting. This can be automated using VBA to make the consolidation faster.
