Default Critical path not displayed on Gantt Chart

I recently developed a project that initially showed the critical path in red. After some changes and updates, the critical path no longer shows on the Gantt Chart. I believe I have checked the appropriate boxes but nothing seems to work.

I'm using MSProject 2010. Can someone advise what could be happening or what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

Try applying the Tracking Gantt view - does it appear? If filter for critical - do any tasks appear? Have you set a constraint on tasks such as Finish no Later than?

In Tracking Gantt view the tasks all appear. When the filter for critical is applied it does generate a list of tasks. I do not believe I have set any constraints on any tasks although I can go back and verify. There are over 200 lines but maybe do a spot check.

Take a look at the Gantt Chart Tool format ribbon. Did you inadvertently uncheck the box for Critical tasks?

No, the Critical Tasks box (under Format) is checked.

Julie, I noticed some tasks under the 'Advanced' tab under Information show 'As Soon as Possible' for the constraint type while in other tasks the field is not enabled. Could this be an issue?

Have you customized the view with formatting? You may have luck re-setting the view to default - but you will lose any customization. Display a view other than the Gantt chart (assuming that is the one that is not showing correct information). Click the Task Ribbon and click on the drop down underneath the Gantt Chart button (far left). Choose Reset to Default.

Regarding the Constraint type - are you using Manually scheduled tasks? You cannot change the constraint type for manually scheduled tasks.

I did the Reset to Default which produced no change. When I filter the critical tasks it doesn't list tasks that I know should be critical. This is very frustrating..

Your second comment answered my question concerning constraints. Thank you.

Just to back up a second. Whether a task is critical or not is a mathematical calculation in Project. if a task has Total Slack >0, it is not critical. (Total slack in Project is = float in the PMI terminology world). If you add the Total Slack field to a table, do you see a value greater than zero? If so, by Project's definition it is not critical - while it may be very important to you.

You can alter the definition of critical in File > Options, Advanced and you can increase the value above zero.

I believe we've found the issue. I increased the value above zero and the critical tasks now highlight in red. This appears to have solved a very annoying problem and I am very grateful for your help.

Thank you.

Default My Solution

My Solution:

After showing slack (format-slack tickbox) on my Gant the line showed my finish date like 4 months after my actual finish which nerfed my critical path.

File -
options -
advanced -
Calculation options for this project -
move end of completed parts after status date back to status date.

This reset the slack back and allowed my CP to work again.

Found this thread which led me to my solution so thought I'd create a login and post. Hope this helps others.

-Ryan

Thank you.
One thing that I have found with MSP is that I always have a dummy milestone at the end of the plan which is called "fake CPA" and is a long way in the future. Then I use deadlines to investigate the critical path to any given location in the plan by copying the finish date into the deadline field. I did a blog post on this which might be interesting?
