Not understanding discrepancies in homework and need help
Hello, I have been following a guide that our instructor has given us for a project, but, I am having a few issues with my project turning out in a similar fashion as the tutorials project, and I am not sure where it is going wrong (it could be that we are using different versions of MS Project, but I highly doubt that is the cause). Now first off, this tutorial is using the 2012 year, and our instructor informed us to use the 2015 calendar year. Which I have done, and with that, there are some problems, since 2012 was a leap year, and 2015 is obviously not. However, my problems don't originate from the lack of an extra day, but with my tracking, entry, and cost tables. For some reason, even though I have a number of days that equals 90, it keeps displaying 91 on the entry table. For tracking, it displays 23 days, but instead lists 23.26 as the amount of days of actual duration, and the remaining duration gets messed up as well. All of this throws the cost off. In the attached pictures, the right is the video tutorial that we are supposed to be following, where as the left is my project. I would appreciate if anyone could offer me some insight, I have tried starting from a baseline several times, and it keeps doing this, so I really don't understand what is going on or what I am inputting wrong. I assume because I just signed up, I can't post links, but if you search on Youtube for POM+ Part 4 you will find the videos that I am talking about, they are all uploaded by mango2103. Attached below is the screenshots of the issues. I can't upload the MS Project file here. :/ |

Personally I think your instructor needs to give a bit clearer in direction.
Well, a couple of things off the bat - Jan 3 2012 was a Tuesday and Jan 3 2015 was a Saturday. So, did you change Jan 3 to a working day? Or should you have started the project on January 2 - a Friday or the following Monday - January 5. Did you enter all of the holidays (New Year's, Martin Luther King, Memorial Day, July 3 (observed in 2015), Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas?) It is impossible for me to tell what is going on with just screen shots. I don't know the instructions you have been given - but I'd start with getting some clarity about when should the project start. If I enter a start date of January 2 and enter the summary task R&D and the subtasks through "Nutrition report" plus the durations and links - I get a summary task duration of 50 days not 54. The screen shot you show from the tutorial is incorrectly not using the Project Summary task - so all Task IDs are off. |
