Unhappy Splitting Tasks - Predecessors

Hi everyone, first time poster.

I am new to Project and and still trying to learn the ropes. Sorry if my question has a simple solution but I cant for the life of me find it anywhere.

So say I have 3 tasks (Task 1, Task 2, Task 3).

Task 3 will take 10 days for completion, split into 6 days(Part 1) and 4 days(Part 2).

Part 1 is dependent on Task 1 being completed and Part 2 is dependent on Task 2 being completed.

My question is how do you assign predecessors to split tasks, so that Part 2 begins when Task 2 is finshed.

Thank You!

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

My suggestion would be to create two separate tasks linked to each other with a Predecessor.

You cannot assign Predecessors to "parts" of a split task.

Hope this helps.

Just to expand on OTPMs answer- if task 3 has 2 dependencies, then it is really 2 tasks not one. I would suggest linking task 1 to task 3a, taks 2 to 3b, and then linking 3a to 3b (assuming the second half needs the first part to be completed before it can be carried out).

This assumes that the tasks are not resource driven (i.e. that 2 different people are carrying out both 1 and 2, and are both needed to do task 3), which is a different scenario.
