Sounds as if you have minimised the ribbon somewhere along the line.
If you go up to the top tabs (file, view, etc) and hover over one of them (so it appears raised or highlighted then right click, you should get a menu up that at the bottom has "minimise the ribbon"with a tick next to it. Click on it to untick, and the ribbon should be back.
