HermannBaumgartner is on a distinguished road
Default Error occurred, when I went to open a MS Project schedule.

An unexpected problem occurred while opening the file: “The file may be damaged. Try using a backup copy.”

Is there a resolution that I can use to fix it?

If you cannot open the file at all I'm afraid reverting to a backup copy is your only answer.
