Thumbs down Problems when opening previous version of .mpp file from Site Assets in SharePoint site

Hi all

I sync .mpp (Professional 2013) to SharePoint Foundation 2013. Everything is OK when i edit in Tasks list or Open with Project.

I turn on Version history in Site Assets, where located .mpp file to track version of this file. It's also OK.

But when i openning the previous version of .mpp file by click on the name of each version, a message displayed as below:

Sorry, we couldn't sync the tasks llist to SharePoint site. Please make sure:

the SharePoint site is running and is not in read-only mode
you have sufficient permission to sync to this SharePoint site
the tasks list is still available and its name hasn't changed
<<OK>>

I click OK many, many times, and finnally, it open the previous .mpp file i want.

The same situation when i click X to close file. I have to click OK any times untill the file closed.

How can i fix it?

Regards,

Laibiang

I'm not a SharePoint expert by an aspect, but I see a conflict between multiple versions of a project file and synching. Only one Project file can be synched with one SharePoint task list. I can see the potential for issues when SharePoint doesn't know precisely which version of the Project file it is synced with.

Thank JulieS,
I notice about the conflict between multiple versions of a project file from your answer. In version history table below, when i click on the version No. 0.8, it open normally. But any version less than, the problem occur.
It's an inconvenience for me to click OK many times to open previous .mpp file and when closing file which has been opened.

The conflict appears to be between version control and syncing. Is there a possibility that you can disable versioning on the task list you are synching?

Thank JulieS,
But the main purpose is tracking version of this file.
Any time the Project Manager need to change any thing in .mpp file: Task name, start date, finish date, the assignee ...... he have to open .mmp file from Site Assets in SharePoint Site (2-way syncing with MS Project Professional).
So, i want to track version to see who and when modified .mpp file, view the previous version and restore in case of need.

I think you're going to have to not sync. Store the Project files in a library (not syncing) and use version control there.

Thank,
But it's the unique place the .mpp store in SharePoint Site.
I mean the file which syn with SharePoint Task.
MS say:

These two entities are now linked, and the SharePoint task list is considered the "master". Opening the .mpp file from any location other than Site Assets will damage the link and cause issues, such as duplicate tasks on the SharePoint Tasks list. You may also recieve an error message which is discussed later in this article.

I believe that only one file can be synced with a task list. From the article posted below, if you wish to open an earlier version you need to "restore" or "view" - not open.

Hi JulieS.
Restore back previous version not an option, because i want to track what changed in each versions.
In Sharepoint, when you click on View in Version table list, it show the information of this version, not the main file.
Thanks for your link.

Okay, I am now at a place where I can do some testing. I am not using the Foundations version of SharePoint but am using SharePoint 2013 online. Here's what I'm doing and what I see:

  • I create an MS Project file in Project 2013 SP-1.
  • After saving the file, I choose File > Share, Sync with SharePoint. That creates the SharePoint site along with the Task List. The Project file is stored in the Site Assets library.
  • I go to the Site Assets library for the newly created SharePoint site and ensure that versioning is set correctly.
  • I exit Project and go to the task list.
  • I open the task list in Project using the SharePoint option.
  • Edit, save and close.
  • When I view the site assets, I can see the current version.
  • If I click to view the version history, I can right click on a previous version, select open in a new tab. (This is using Chrome)
  • The old project file is downloaded and I can open as needed.
  • If I use IE - I need to select "Save Target As" to download a copy of the file. Directly trying to open throws the error you note. I would not open the file directly - but download a copy to avoid potential issues with sync errors.
