adjusting calendar for a task and viewing calendar day result
I have a task of 10 days, workdays. It has the normal calendar of 5 days a week and 8 hours a day. It is 0% complete right now. My tasks are effort driven and fixed units, so everything is as in default.
I also have a column for displaying calendar days. I had done that myself before with a formula and it is working fine. So for my task of 10 days for example, that column shows 14 days Here is my questions: Question 1) When I change the calendar of that task, to a 24 hour calendar, the calendar day column shows 3 days. When I change it to a 7 day calendar, the calendar day column shows 10 days. But even if I choose fix duration or fixed work option and then make these changes, I still get the same outcome upon change. Should it not be different results? Question 2) This one I did as experiment. I did not used “work” column in this schedule before so everything was zero. I inserted a work column, and for this task I assigned a random work amount of 100 But when I did the changes as stated above, the 100 never changed, for any option. Why? Question 3) something is fixed for this task and when I change my calendars it is just dividing that fixed quantity to find the new calendar day duration. If it is fixed units, I don’t see a column for it. How can I see that fixed thing that the calculations are based upon? Also when I change to 24 hour calendar, would it not be 3.33 days? Why is it 3? |

Please share your formula. A 10 day duration task starting on a Monday and ending 10 working days later is really only 12 calendar days (assuming Saturday and Sunday are non-working) - so I don't know how you got 14 days.
What date/time does the task begin and end? Regarding your second question: Question 2) This one I did as experiment. I did not used “work” column in this schedule before so everything was zero. I inserted a work column, and for this task I assigned a random work amount of 100 But when I did the changes as stated above, the 100 never changed, for any option. Why? Work is not related to duration unless you have resources assigned to the task. It is the assignment units (Peak) that creates the relationship between work and duration. Assuming the task is fixed units and you have resource(s) assigned - if you increase duration, work will increase. But without assignments, there is no relationship between work and duration. Regarding: Question 3) something is fixed for this task and when I change my calendars it is just dividing that fixed quantity to find the new calendar day duration. If it is fixed units, I don’t see a column for it. How can I see that fixed thing that the calculations are based upon? Also when I change to 24 hour calendar, would it not be 3.33 days? Why is it 3? i don't understand "something is fixed for this task". Are you referring to task type (Fixed Duration, Fixed Units, Fixed Work)? These have no impact unless you have resource assigned. The definition of a day is 8 hours - if you change to a 24 hours calendar the "day" definition doesn't change. Depending upon when the task begins and ends, you may see 3.33 days or 3 days. Please post your formula. |

With a task starting today (Tuesday 30 Sept at 08:00) with 10 days duration using the Standard calendar - the task ends 13 October at 5:00 pm.
Assuming you have made the "7 Days Calendar" also as 08:00 to 17:00 and using your formula - I see 14 days in the custom field. When I apply the 24 hours calendar, the duration in the standard duration field still reads 10 days. The task begins 30 Sept at 08:00 and ends Oct 3 at 16:00. The duration in the calculated field is 3.88 days. Regarding task type - as I said it does NOT play into task duration unless you have resources assigned. If you have resources assigned then the "fixed" value is not altered by Project when you alter one of the other values. For example: Fixed Units task type: you change Work, Project recalculates Duration you change Duration, Project recalculates Work Fixed Duration task type: you change Work, Project recalculates units you change Units, Project recalculates Work But again - this only applies if you have resources assigned. If you have resources assigned and you are using Task Calendars, unless you check the box "scheduling ignores resource calendars" the task will be scheduled during common working time between the task calendar and the resource calendar. If possible, I suggest getting some hands-on training in Project. It is by no means an intuitive tool. I can only help so much by answering questions you have been posting. A good 2 to 3 days course will help clear up many questions. |
