Default Resource assignment with resource calendars

Hi all

Normally when I set a schedule up with every resource using the same times in their calendars, and I then decide that resource (A) will spend 70% of their time on a 2 day task, and resource (B) will spend 30% of their time on the same task, it does exactly what I would expect and schedules resource (A) to work 0.7 day and resource (B) 0.3 day.

However, how do I get it to schedule resource (A) to spend their total available time on the task each day? So = 1 day on the first day and 0.4 on the second?, and resource (B) to spend their total available time (0.6) on the first day, rather than splitting it out so that resource (A) does 0.7 day for 2 days and resource (B) does 0.3 days for 2 days?

Thank you

Jo

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you assign a resource at 70% assignment units Project calculates work based upon Task Duration * Units. Assuming an 8 hour day - the resource's work is 11.2 hours.

If you want the resource to work the 11.2 hours in shorter time, assign the resource at 100% and specify the 11.2 hours of work. Project will recalculate the duration to 1.4 days.

Split your screen to show the Task Form in the lower pane and enter the work for each resource as you make the assignment.

Hi Julie

I think I am confusing myself!

Basically I have multiple resources assigned to the same tasks throughout my schedule. I have levelled the schedule and here lies the issue. There are often instances where a resource will not have any work loaded for them for a long period, because they are waiting for another/other resources to become available before they can move on to the next task.

There are also lots of days where they are working but not being fully utilised too.

Is this simply because we have too many resources assigned to the same tasks and there is no way around the issues we are finding?

Can you offer a solution that doesn't involve creating the same task 4 times (if 4 people are working on it at the same time) and assigning them all individually to the duplicated tasks? the schedule will be so long if I have to do this.

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated

Thanks

Jo

The resource leveling command is used to resolve resource overallocations. It is not a resource optimization tool. If the resources are not fully utilized, assign them at their maximum units - then at least if the schedule is leveled they will be fully assigned when they are assigned.
You may also want to allow the leveling command to level individual assignments - that way if one resource is not overallocated s/he can work on the task independent of other works.
Regarding gaps - there really isn't any way around that. If Resource A is waiting on an output from a task that Resource B is working on - there may be times when A is just waiting without other tasks.
