Default Cross Project Dependencies

Hi Fellow Forum members
I am having an issues with cross-project dependencies.
..The settings in File/Options are correctly set.
..I have both project plans open and stored on my desktop
..I open the task information box for the Successor task and enter PROJECT1\2 in the ID box and tab across. The remaining boxes show External Task. I then click OK.
No external (grey) task appears in my plan and when I go back into the Task Information box the external predecessor has disappeared.
Any ideas on a resolution would be appreciated.
Thanks

Tony

I have to say, in my opinion, that is the most difficult way of creating cross project links.

The method I prefer:
The directions below are for Project 2010:
  1. Open both files.
  2. On the View tab click New Window to open the New Window window. Both of the file will be listed in the window.
  3. Click and drag to select both files.
  4. Select aview from the view drop down if you don't like the default Gantt with Timeline.
  5. Click OK to create a new project combining both of the selected projects.
To link tasks across projects.
  1. Create the consolidated project (above).
  2. Click the predecessor task in the first project.
  3. CTRL+ click to select the successor tasks in the other project.
  4. Click the link tasks button (Task ribbon.)
  5. If necessary, change the link type, add lead or lag as needed.
  6. Close the consolidated project. No need to save.
  7. Save the changes to other other project files.

Hi Julie
Many thanks fore your response. I should have made it clearer in my initial post that I WAS using the consolidated project view on my company laptop and it did not appear to work at all. I have just tried it on my own laptop and it works fine. I wonder if we have build issues on the company laptops as the issue appears on a number of them
Anyway thanks for the clarification.
Tony

Hi Tony,

Sorry for the misunderstanding and thanks for the clarification. Project 2010 should be up to SP-2.

Does creating the cross project link work as expected (versus typing)?

Let's hope it's an easy fix - just installing the updates. Enjoy your weekend.
