Auto-level resources for parallel tasks with fixed work
Hi all,
I try to find a way to auto-level resources based on their available working hours per day. There are two tasks starting at the same time (see Screenshot "problem"): Task A takes 2 days Task B takes 4 days Both tasks start at the same time and have to be completed by the same resource. Work is fixed, so duration can vary. I want the resource "User A" to work 50% for two days on both task. As soon as Task A is completed, User A should work a 100% on Task B. Project either moves the task to resolve the problem or assigns the resource for 50% until the end of Task B (although 100% would be possible). I want to achieve the result shown in screenshot "goal". Is there a way to do this without entering the values day by day in Resource Usage Sheet? Thanks cineasta |

No, sorry. The resource leveling command will never alter assignment units nor assign resources. Its only job is to move tasks so the resource's Peak Units are less than or equal to Max. Units.
Assign your resource at 100% to task A to get the 8 hours of work done in one day and then assign at 100% to task B to accomplish to 32 hours of work in 4 days. We are not as efficient at multi-tasking as we would like to think |

Thank you
Hi,
thanks a lot for your reply. I thought so... In reality, two guys work on Task A 50% because the task can only be done by both of them together. They do this for two days in the morning. So the afternoon is free for the second task. After two days the entire day is available for the second task. I will try a different approach in setting up my tasks. Maybe split the longer tasks in additional sub tasks. Thanks for the feedback! |

If you need to restrict Task A to be worked on during specific times, consider creating a task calendar restricting work to only the morning hours. Assign that task calendar to Task A. Then resource leveling will do what you want it to. It will assign only 4 hours (at 100%) for Task B during the duration of Task A then 8 hours per day for the end of Task B.

Yeah, awesome! I wasn't really aware of the calendar per task option.
Now I got the exact result that I tried to achieve. I assigned a 4hrs calendar to Task A. When I assigned resources and used the resource leveling function, Task B was split at the end of Task A. First part assigned the resource 50%, the second part 100%. See the result attached. Thanks a lot! |

Great. I'm glad the task calendar accomplishes what you need.
