Default MS Project not calculating earned value correctly

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, and this has probably been posted before but I cannot understand how MSP calculates BCWP (earned value).

I thought it was commonly understood that:
BCWP = Budgeted cost x % Complete

This calculation holds regardless of whether I complete the task well before the completion date or on the completion date. i.e. if I finish the task, I can claim all the BCWP.

However, in MSP, regardless of completing all % Complete fields (physical, % work complete, % complete) and having scheduled the project, there are fully complete activities where it is not reporting the full BCWP as it should i.e. that BCWP = 100% of budgeted cost.

Having delved on the web, the only suggestion I can find is that MSP thinks BCWP is somehow time based, so I won't see 100% of my BCWP until the baseline completion date. I am not confusing this with BCWS, which I do understand is time based.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Is your status date set correctly to align with the end of the completed task? I see what you report only if I have a completed task (either ahead of schedule or before schedule) if the status date is before the completion date of the task.
For example: 5 day duration task one resource assigned at $1 per hour. 40 hours of work - $40 baseline cost. I mark the task 100% complete BUT my status date is Wednesday. My BCWP is only $24. I should not have progress through Friday if today is only Wednesday.
Another scenario: 5 day duration task 40 hours of work baseline cost = $40. It is Wednesday I have recorded 24 hours of Actual Work but I set the remaining work to zero. The task is complete - my status date is Wednesday and the BCWP is $40 even though the baseline finish for the task is not until Friday.
I hope this helps.
