Default showing calendar days by keeping normal workday calendar

on my schedules i am showing everything in workdays. and the regular calendar i have is excluding weekends.

when people look at my schedules and see the durations, by default first they assume calendar days. so for example when i show 15 days duration, i mean 3 weeks of activity from 3x5 workdays = 15 days. but they assume 15 calendar days.

this creates confusion and everytime i have to explain the situation.

is there a way that i show the duration in calendar days, but at the same time still keep the saturdays and sundays as non working days?

or, when i show calendar days, saturday and sunday automatically calculated as workdays now and in every calculation they are included now - which i dont want....

Create a new calendar where all days are working. Add one of the custom duration fields (Duration1 for example) and customize with the following formula:

ProjDateDiff(Start,Finish,"Name of your 7 day calendar")

Thanks so much.

So What I did was, I created the new 7 day calendar first. Then, without changing my Project calendar, (keeping the standard 5 day calendar), I added the column "Duration1" and modified that column with your formula. Now I am showing that column (I called it "Calendar days duration" and I am displaying that column near my regular "Duration" column, which is still based on 5 day calendar.

So this way, except showing that new column to the user, I am not causing any modifications in any calculations to my project, and, still I am keeping my regular 5 day calendar right? So I am showing the new column just for information. By the way I am not able to enter data to this new column. I can only change it if I change my regular duration column, and my new column displays the corresponding number of calendar days. Is there a way to edit this column directly also?

Also now I wanted to name my old duration column as "workday duration" but i wasnt able to change it. how can i do it?

You're welcome and thank you for the feedback.

Correct. Keep the standard 5-day calendar as the project calendar and as the base calendar for the resources. The 7-day calendar is only used for the calculation of the custom duration field.

You cannot have the custom field be both editable and calculated by the formula. However, if the duration changes the formula will automatically recalculate.

You cannot rename the standard Duration field. You may only rename custom fields.

the durations in my new column, based on a 7 day calendar (and remembering that i still keep my project calendar at normal 5 day calendar) shows days in decimals like 13.725 days or 25.25 days for some activities. how can i eliminate those decimals from showing and show whole numbers in that column?

Did you set the working time on weekends the same as working time on Monday through Friday? If the duration column is showing full days and the working times are the same, it should still be whole numbers.

one more thing. i just realized that my column that shows the duration based on 7 day calendar (again, my project calendar is still standard 5 day calendar, but only this column is showing durations based on a 7 day calendar), I realized that my new column's summary activities are all 0. i mean individual activities are all fine as far as calculating the calendar days from start to finish, and displaying it, but, their summary activities do not calculate anything and all zero, including the project summary activity at the very top which also shows zero for this column. How can I make the summary activities show the correct calendar day duration for this column?

In the Customize Field dialog, set the Calculate to Group or summary rows to "use formula".

ok thanks
and since you told me i can not change the name of my duration column, but i want to rename it to "workday duration", i am going to insert the duration2 column and rename it.

how can i make the durations in my new duration 2 column to be the same as my original 5 day calendar based duration column? i will hide the original column from view and just show the workday duration and calendar day duration columns, although i will still enter my values to the duration column in the background.

In the Duration2 column enter [Duration] in the customize fields dialog, formula section.

and also on one of my projects the 7 day calendar column started displaying duratins with decimals for some reason, although on some projects it didnt. i dont know why. they are the same type of projects which i had created form same start template. do you have any idea why? why on some projects 7 day calendar displays durations up to 2 decimal points and on others it doesnt? I didnt have any differnece between the projects as far as the standard calendar etc...

also how can i eliminate the decimals? it displays duration like 150.38 days for instance. i want to make it 150 or 151 if rounded up, which is ok. font and text fields doesnt provide anything

If tasks do not begin or end on the exact start or end of the working day or you have applied lead or lag to task relationships or you have resources with different calendars, duration will show as decimals. You cannot change it without changing the pieces leading to the duration calculation.
