Default changing the standard display format

I would like to show the gannt chart information on a single line. Let me better explain.

Consider a project with three phases and milestones between the phase. Phase 1: Investigation followed by milestone - POR Followed by Phase 2: Development followed by milestone - Release. Followed by Phase 3: Shipments followed by milestone - EOL.

I'd like to create these phases using the task duration, start date end date features in Project but report out these tasks and milestones on a single line (collapsing the 'task' details). With different colors for each phase and milestone.

Is this possible in Project?

I would add the Project Summary task (Tools > Options, view tab in 2007). You can then select to rollup the task bars - or perhaps just the milestones - to the summary bar.

Thanks Julie, I got that too albeit a bit more manual than I had hoped. I changed the colors of the sub task bars and I was hoping the the segments in teh summary task bar would have the same colors. It did not. I changed them manually.

But I have another question. I would like to display the Task Name for the summary bar to the left of the summary bar. I found websites that talk about a macro to use yet I don't have any macros preloaded in my version of Project. What do I need to do to get the task name associated with the summary task row to display? I can see how to get the task names to display next to their respective tasks lines but can't get the summary task name to display next to the summary task line.

Thanks.

In Format > Bar Styles you can add text to the left of the summary task bars.

You may also want to look into creating some task bar styles (using Flag fields) to create the different color roll up bars. It is more efficient than individual formatting.
