Default Resources, subcontractors not employees

As a general contractor building a schedule I has assigned different subcontractors to different tasks using the resources field. The problem becomes Project is treating those subcontractors as individual employees governed by the defined work day and is moving tasks around based on over allocation of resources. Is there a way to set Project up to allow it to not consider the workload assigned to these resources? Thanks…

You should be defining your resources on the Resource Sheet view, not creating them by typing their names into the Resource Names column in the Gantt chart.

If you go to the Resource Sheet view, you can enter a maximum (max unit) above 100% to indicate that you have multiple of those subcontractor resources. So if you have 4 carpenters, set the max units to 400%.

It also sounds as though you have automatic leveling on - I would set the leveling option to manual. Not all overallocations need to be fixed.

OK, so I went and set all the subcontractors to 10 in the Max units box. 1 is the default, I assume that corresponds to 100%, So I have set all my sub’s at 1000%, this should be a overkill but I do not want the program to make any adjustments because of this issue. This has removed all the over-allocation flags.
Concerning the automatic leveling, this would be on the resource ribbon tab, level section, leveling options, I see a radio button selection for leveling calculations, manual was and is selected.
This seems to have fixed this issue, Thanks... Moving on to updating and extracting a short interval schedule out of the main schedule, likely will post again

It sounds like you are on the right track. The only other way that project will "moving tasks around based on over allocation" is if you have the "Prevent overallocations" options selected in the Team Planner view. I'd open Project with the default Project1 file opened and check that option. (Note: it is only available in the Professional version)
