Default providing early start date

Hello,
Basic question but just to make sure i dont have the wrong habit of doing it...

An activity will start no earlier than say 1st of next month. when i want to put this constraint, i write this date into the start column? if not where?

Why can it not start any earlier? I suggest double clicking on the Task to show the Task Information form. ON the advanced tab select "Start no earlier than" as the constraint and set the constraint date.
Usually typing in the start date will set the SNET - but if you are scheduling from a finish date it sets a SNLT - so best to explicitly select the constraint type.
