Resource Allocation
If you have a resource whose availability is set to say 50% and you assign that resource to a task that is scheduled for two days, why does Project not extend the task to 4 days?
No indication is given of a potential scheduling issue. I am using Project 2010. Thanks in advance for any advice. Tony |

Hi Tony,
Project will calculate the work based upon the task duration and the assignment unit using the formula Duration* hours per day * Units = Work So a two day duration task with a single resource assigned at 50%, results in 8 hours of work. 2 days * 8 hours per day * 50% = 8 If you would like project to increase the duration, enter 16 hours of work and project will recalculate the duration based upon: Duration= Work/(Hours per day * units) 4 days = 16 hours/ (8h*50%) I hope this helps. Hi Julie
Many thanks for your response. If I enter a task that states it is a 2 day task and assign a resource that is only available for 50% of their time then surely I should not have to re-enter the duration for it to calulate that the task will take twice as long to complete! Tony |

Tony, you are confusing duration and work. Duration is how long a task takes from beginning to end. If your resource is only available half time, then shouldn't it take twice as long? I suggest working with the Task Entry view (Gantt chart over the Task Form) to see if this works for you. Enter your work estimates of 16 hours and let project calculate the duration.

Hi Julie
I really appreciate your response, especially this late at night . I am not confusing duration with work. My technical team advise that a task will take two days of effort to complete a task. As such I enter 2 days as the duration. I then assign a resource who is only available for 50% of the time. In which case the task will actually take 4 days to complete in reality. To give a little more background to my issue: I have a team that provides both Operational Support and Project Support. These are split as 50% Operational Support and 50% Project Support. Hope this makes my issue a little clearer. Kind regards Tony |

Ah, but "two days of effort" is two days of work - not duration. You are entering duration and Project will calculate work - that is what it is programmed to do.

Hi Julie
Thanks for your response. the light has come on at last . I have been using Project for many years believe it or not but even I forget the basics sometimes. This is why this forum is so invaluable. Thanks again. Tony |
