Cannot find source of overallocation

Default Cannot find source of overallocation

My manager recently asked for my assistance with resource leveling of the schedule for our project. Per his request, I am using the Resource Usage sheet, filtered by Overallocated Resources, to view the team members who need leveling. I was going by resource, looking for the days with overallocation, and decreasing how many hours were being spent on each task assigned to them so that they hit the 8-hour-or-below mark.

I currently have an associate who has tasks assigned over a 12-year period, and though I have gone over and over each day of that period, I cannot find a single instance in which she is scheduled for greater than 8 hours in tasks. My manager has reviewed her tasks multiple times as well. Nothing we can find appears to be a trigger.

Any advice? We're at a loss.

Overallocation is due to the sum of assignment units (called peak) being greater than the resource's max units. So even if the resource is scheduled for less than 8 hours per day -- if she is scheduled for two tasks each with one hour for work but the tasks overlap -- she's overallocated.

I'd check your settings under Leveling Options -- ensure it is set to "day by day" or "week by week" - that may help.

Thank you for your reply, Julie!

I've added the columns Max Units and Peak to my Resource Usage sheet and can see days where the associate is assigned to 200% or more in the Peak column, though her max is 100%. I assume these are the tasks that are causing the issue?

Under Leveling Options it was set to day-by-day, but switching to week-by-week takes that associate off of the overallocation list.

Thanks again, your help is greatly appreciated!

Danielle

Yes, those would be the overallocation days. If they are few and far between, I wouldn't worry about it. Project has to schedule the tasks in a mathematical fashion -- as project managers rarely can we control resources in that manner.

I'd leave the leveling set to week by week but review to make sure everything is okay.
