Project custom field lookup from spreadsheet
I need to have a field in project which works something like "VLookup" in excel.
A colleague of mine in Norway has a spreasheet of resources on a different server from my file (thougha ccessible by me) with each resources current status and other information. I'd like to have a custom field in my resource sheet which looks up the information on each resource, depending on an ID number common to both my project file (resource list) and my colleagues XLS spreadsheet. (Which incidentally is password protected to edit, but not for read-only). The spreadsheet changes all the time, so I need this to be a "live" formula, rather than a one-time lookup. thanks Guy |

Hello Bluephoto,
I'm sorry this would not be something available out of the box with Project. There are custom fields in Project that can display a list of values and you may import a list from other project files, but importing and updating in real time would have to be coded. If you have skills in programming, you may get some pointers from the Microsoft forum on customization and programming at: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...stprog/threads Julie |

great, thanks Julie,
That looks like my sort of forum! I'm guessing someone out there has already linked project to excel somehow. If not, then I'll post the code for it here, as I guess it would be quite useful! (Though if it was that useful, then someone would surely have done it by now!) thanks Guy |

I think what you will hear is that linking Excel to Project is not wise -- but running an automated import on a scheduled basis would be best.
You're welcome and thanks for the feedback. |

I think what is really not wise is that I have set 262 individual pieces of test equipment as resources in my project file, and maintaining their delivery dates based on someone elses procurement spreadsheet isn't going to be fun at all!
I'm sure theres a better way to do this! |

Ah, I see. Is it possible to use milestones to mark the delivery of the equipment with the dates linked (paste link) to the Excel spread sheet?

I am so sorry to jump in here in the middle of your discussion.
But I've been looking at how to link Project to Excel, and reading your comments I wondered - why isn't it a good idea to do this. Julie, you mentioned it's not wise. Many thanks, and again, apologies for jumping in here. |
