Default Resources "Available From" Date in resource sheet

I'm setting up all my resources in the resource sheet (MSP2010) and find that the "available from and to" dates seem to work in a strange way (either that or I'm trying to make them do something they're not designed to do).

My resources BECOME available for use (at 50%) on a certain date.

Lets say I can have "Brian" from the beginning of May, to work on my project. Obviously, the relevant line on the resource sheet should show "Available from May 1st at 50%".

Instead, it seems that Brian is available UNTIL ("available to") 30th April at zero percent - which is technically correct, but pretty counter-intuitive in my opinion, and tells me nothing about his availablility AFTER the beginning of May.

Is there any way to make the resource sheet show what I'm looking for?

thanks
Guy

Hello Guy,

The available from and to are relative to the current date. If you double click on Brian's name to open the Resource Information dialog and enter May 1 in the first available from box, you will see the available to field in the resource sheet say April 30 11:59 pm and the max unit will say zero. Relative to today's day (early April) Brian's max units are zero 12:00 am on May 1.

As a suggestion -- using available from and to dates do not shift tasks assigned to Brian. You might want to consider making the days leading up to May 1 non-working on Brian's calendar instead of the available from/to dates. By changing Brian's working calendar, Project will automatically shift any tasks scheduled prior to May 1 to start on May 1.

I hope this helps.

Julie

Actually, that's not how I see it working.
If I put a future "available from" date in the resource information dialog, stating 100% availability beyond that date (May 1st), then no "available to" date appears in the resource sheet, as there's nothing telling project that the resource is not 100% available already. I have to specifically tell project that availability UNTIL May 1st is zero. It seems by defauly project assumes 100% availability unless advised otherwise. Perhaps if I could reset the default behaviour to assume 0% availability unless specifically advised otherwise, then what you say above would be true.

In my case, though, "Brian" is actually a piece of test equipment which we are looking to purchase. The "available from" date should be the date we receive the equipment from the supplier.

Is there a table view which shows all such resources, and will allow me to set, or at least view, the first date on which Brian will turn up for work- rather than having all resources listed, but have no visual clue as to when they will be available for work?

thanks
Guy

I only have one line entered in my resource availability list:

Available from: May 1, 2012
Available to: NA

If the machine doesn't land on your site until May 1, there is no reason to enter the zero availability line -- the assumption is any date previous to May 1 the max units is zero.

I am using Project Professional 2010 SP-1
